Oh So Tired
I haven't been feeling that sick yet. Really, just slightly nauseated. The main thing is that I'm so utterly exhausted. I miss my morning cup of coffee with vanilla creamer. Gotta run! Diaper duty calls!

Could it be???
Yep, according to three pregnancy tests, I am pregnant! I went online to research the chance of having a false-positive pregnancy test and I guess the chances are very unlikely. Although, some sources said that some forms of abdominal cancer can produce a false-positive pregnancy test (great! Something else for me to worry about). I haven't been to a doctor yet so I am trying to be cautious about saying anything. I guess not so cautious since I just posted the news on my blog -- ha!
According to an online due date calculator I am due June 26th, 2009! It's my birthday month too!
My face is breaking out and I am extraordinarily tired but I have yet to experience "morning sickness". Last pregnancy, I started feeling sick early on and it continued throughout the entire first semester. It does worry me that I am not feeling sick because I've read from multiple reliable sources that nausea in pregnancy is actually a good sign of a sustainable pregnancy. So, yes, I'm worried about that.
It feels surreal to be pregnant again. And, I am really terrified of delivery. Delivering Samuel was absolute misery but I can think of no greater reason to go through that misery again than for another wonderful child. But, yes, "scared" would be a good word to use. I am praying to God that my next delivery will be a lot easier. I can't really remember the pain but I do remember the 6-7 hours of pushing. I was miserable and exhausted. I was begging for a c-section and kept saying, "I can't do this!" while the sadistic doctors, nurses, and my wonderful husband kept chanting, "Yes, you can!" I'm being tongue-in-cheek but I do remember having an incredible dislike for the doctor when she told me they needed to take away my epidural.I think it's a complete miracle that we (mothers) can survive giving birth. Heck, the Duggar Mommy has done it seventeen times.
So, we're excited! All that worrying about never getting pregnant again for nothing. I must frustrate God more than anyone (because I worry more than anyone else, I think).

Isn't it Ironic?
The day after I posted my last blog entry, the most miraculous, ironic event happened...
but I'll have to blog about it later...

God's Promises
I've been reading through an Elizabeth George Bible Study on the life of Abraham and Sarah. They are examples of having great faith in God but also they made mistakes along the way. Sometimes I think that if God were to audibly talk to me or if an angel of the Lord appeared to me just like in those days then maybe it would be easier for me to trust and not dwell on my fears. Even though I would love to have another baby soon I am okay with not being pregnant (most days) yet because I haven't lost all the baby weight (20 down, 20 more to go -- yikes! Can't believe I gained that much extra baby weight during my pregnancy!!) I'm content with not being pregnant yet (more content than I was 6 months or so ago) but the fear does creep in,
"What if I never get to have another child??"
"What if my dreams of having a big family never come to fruition??"
I try not to do dwell on those thoughts because nothing good comes from constantly thinking about fears. It only makes me grow more impatient and wonder why He hasn't given me what I want (i.e. am I being punished??). I try to dwell on God's promises. Specifically, I always try to remind myself that God knows what is best for me and I just need to trust in His plan & His perfect timing. I definitely have my moments when fear sets in but I'm learning patience and that God knows what is best for me even when I think my plan would be wonderful.
Back to the whole Sarah and Abraham study...it's funny to me that God told Sarah and Abraham that they would have a child when she is 90-years-old and they scoffed at that notion. I think if God were to tell me, audibly, or send an angel to tell me that I need not worry because I would have another child within a year surely I would not have an ounce of disbelief. I would think that if He told me that at 90-years-old I would have a child then surely I would not have an ounce of disbelief. And so I can't believe they scoffed! But then, I am reminded that we have more than what they had in the Old Testament. We have God, Himself, living within us if we are a believer! We have a whole book telling us of God's character and promises. So, maybe, He isn't saying audibly to me, "Emily, don't worry. You will have a child within one years time" but He is reminding me to trust in Him, seek after Him,look for how I can serve Him (and the people He puts in my life) today. The verses that I have stored in my heart remind me that He has a purpose for my life and things He wants to do through me.I should not dwell in fear about the future because today has enough worries of it's own.
I have been so blessed as I have been reading through the Elizabeth George's Study Guides on Sarah & Abraham, and Proverbs 31. I can see how God has been molding me and it has just been so encouraging because I was in a slump for a period there. I now have peace and joy in my life, despite not receiving what I want, because I know that His purposes are greater and He knows what is best.It is such a blessing to see how God takes my mistakes, my sin, my failures and makes them into a beautiful tapestry.
So, I'm a work in progress. :)

Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh...The Right Stuff !
That's right, I was privileged enough to go see the New Kids on the Block with my cousin and aunt! It was soooooo much fun! When my cousin and aunt invited me, I was so excited! I was obsessed with NKOTB as a kid and wanted to marry Joey Mcintyre (the younger one with the curly hair). My cousin actually hung out with them as a teenager whenever they would come into town. She would tell me all about her fun times with them and I would ask a million questions over & over again (I was only about 9 years old when she was a teenager). So, it was kind of aprapo (sp?) that we were going to this concert together. I even like their new stuff. My camera stinks and I didn't get any good shots of them, but I am posting pics of me and my aunt and cousin.
I love playing with blocks!

(Please ignore carpeting. We've cleaned it, can't get the stains out & don't have money to replace it -- on the upside, I don't freak out if anyone spills anything on the carpeting & I'm sure we will have many years of Sammy & hopefully more children spilling drinks)
Sammy has been really into stacking blocks lately. Well, he likes to stack everything (books, candles, etc.). Much to my dismay, when mommy or daddy try to build something with blocks Sammy likes to knock them down. He thinks it's funny.I try to discourage it because I don't want him to be a bully in nursery, but maybe I'm being hypersensitive. When he was in nursery a couple Sundays ago I was told by the caregiver that he was trying to give all the other babies/toddlers hugs. It made me so happy because I feel like I'm doing something right. He gets lots of hugs and kisses at home!

Ants, Ants, and More Ants!
I have not been very diligent updating my blog, have it? (That was a rhetorical question). I guess I have just been busy. Sammy is getting into everything and I've got a climber on my hands. Yesterday, he dumped my whole makeup bag on the carpet and earlier he had dumped a whole bag of goldfish crackers as well. So, I've been doing a lot of vacuuming. We also have an ant infestation of epic proportions. It seems like whenever it starts getting cold outside they make themselves at home inside. Nothing is working to get rid of them and I really don't want to have an exterminator spray. I read online that a mixture of molasses, sugar and yeast may work because the yeast will cause them to explode. So far, I haven't noticed a big decrease in numbers. Anyone know of a surefire way to get rid of ants?? Other than that, Travis is keeping busy with work, school and football. He plays for a church league on Saturdays and Sammy and I go out to cheer him on. Halloween is coming soon (as you all know) and so we'll probably hit up the pumpkin patch soon. It should be more fun this year because now Sammy can actually pick out his own pumpkin. I am appalled by the cost of Halloween costumes and wish I had some kind of sewing talent. It's on my list of "Things to Learn How to Do".Anyone know how difficult it is to teach oneself how to sew & use a sewing machine (just for future reference...I'm not actually going to try to make him something for Halloween)? I wish I would have been a homemaking major at The Master's College rather than a Liberal Studies major. Homemaking skills would really come in handy now.I was looking for either a monkey (Sammy is obsessed with bananas), bear (It's part of his nickname and Sammy growls too), or lion costume (going a along with the growling theme). I think we're going to end up patronizing Walmart because finding a reasonably priced costume has been tricky.
I've just been busy attacking ants, cleaning, playing with Sam, and reading. I try to go through a devotional every morning. I have three Elizabeth George devotionals (love her books!!) and the main one I go through is regarding Proverbs 31. Boy, do I always feel convicted! That Proverbs 31 woman is amazing. Maybe in 20 years I will get to be half as amazing as she was.

Busy-Busy-Busy
I started the teacher credentialing program and then we decided it's not the right time. It was far too stressful for us both to be in school, take care of Sam, and maintain a clean household (plus, Trav works too). I am looking for a part time job now.
Last weekend we went to a 49'er game (Sammy hung out with Grammy Bev for the day). It was actually fun. I was stressed out and anxious about going over the Bay Bridge, but I prayed a lot. Yep, I hate bridges. Especially the Bay Bridge. It collapsed in 1989 during the San Francisco earthquake and I saw a made for TV movie about it when I was a child. Ever since that movie I've been afraid of that bridge. I watched way too many disaster movies when I was a child and I think that's why I'm a little more freaked out about these things than most people. Like, I saw a bunch of airplane disaster movies as a kid and so I've always had an intense fear of flying. Don't get me wrong, I will fly but I avoid it as much as possible. If I can drive to the destination, I will.
Sammy has mastered signing "please" and I just love when he does it! He loves bananas and whenever one is in sight he is makes the "please" sign. Now I'm trying to work on "food" and "drink". I use to take such pride in the fact that Sammy would gladly eat his vegetables. I don't know where I went wrong. It's such a struggle now and I worry that he's not getting enough nutrients. His favorite foods are bananas, cheese and anything that mommy and daddy are eating (except if it's vegetables). He also loves books and every time he goes into his room he makes a beeline for his basket of books. It just warms my heart when I see my little bookworm contentedly sitting and looking through a book. He hates when it's time to sleep and cries every time. He carries his little shoes around the house and tries to walk in mommy's flip flops and daddy's crocs. He loves doggies and every morning I say,"Go say 'hi' to the puppies!" and he walks over and greets them. He waves a lot and claps his hands. He's a very huggy little guy and mommy gets lots of hugs all day long.

This is Why Our Office is Actully a Junk Room...
Here is what happened yesterday while we were in our "office" trying to clean & organize it...
T(Travis): "Why don't we put the sewing machine up in the attic?"
Me: "No, because I want to teach myself how to sew."
T: (Trying to find a place to put his textbooks) "Well, I'm going to put my textbooks on top of your bookshelf"(which is full of my cookbooks, fiction, binders, home improvement how-to books, and then there are christian books on the top shelf)
Me: "You can't put your textbooks on top of my books...I'm going to read all of those books. I won't have easy access to them."
T: "So, you are going to read all of those books, teach yourself how to sew, go through credentialing school and take care of Samuel??"
Me: "Yeah" (doesn't he know? I'm Wonder Woman)
That's typical me. I plan 5 bazillion things & I think I can accomplish it all. Furthermore, I don't want to get rid of anything because I think I may need it in the future.
Upon further reflection I now realize that I can probably get rid of those fiction books and make room for his textbooks. I just haven't been interested in reading fiction in a long time. It's just like watching TV...feels like a waste of time. Instead of living my own life I am watching someone live theirs. Don't get me wrong, I do watch TV, but I try not to.
Well, gonna go box those books up to take to a used book store. Won't he be surprised when he gets home?!!

This Week (and for the next couple years)
Did I mention that I start the teacher credentialing program this week? I'm actually excited now. The truth is, I am at my best when I have a stricter schedule that I must follow. Dishes will probably get done quicker. Vacuuming will happen more often. My time with Sammy will be more focused on him. I was at an orientation for the program a couple Saturdays ago and when I called home to check on Sammy, I could hear his little squeals in the background. Normally, I take those noises for granted, but those noises were so precious to me in that moment and made my heart want to be there with him. I think I take him for granted sometimes. I've been at home with him everyday, all day. He's such a blessing in my life and I don't ever want to take him for granted.
I give him kisses all the time and usually he's somewhat passive as I smother his cheeks with kisses. The other night,I went to give him kisses and he leaned his cheek in and then he finally gave me a kiss back (nice slobbery wet kiss on my cheek). Awwwww.

I'm Sicky
I haven't been feeling well this morning; I'm staying home from church (and for a different reason than what the story below would suggest). The good news is that I have finally been sticking with Weight Watchers. I'm seeing results and feeling very motivated. Even though I wanted to lose weight, I just wasn't that motivated the first year of Sammy's life.
Now, I want all my friends out there to not make the same mistakes I have made. I have this problem, I don't always follow directions. For example, a couple nights ago I was making salsa. The directions recommended that while chopping jalepenos the use of gloves will prevent irritation. Being a foolish girl, I thought, "Well, I don't need gloves! That won't happen to me!" Trust me, gloves should be worn while cutting jalepenos. My hands started to burn and there were blotches of red all over them. My husband suggested that I should soak my hands in a bowl of water & baking soda. That did not work. I went online to research how to stop the burning. A site recommended that I soak my hands in milk. While my hands were soaking there was some relief, but it did not last. I had to go to bed with hands that felt as though they had been burned by the sun. Yesterday, there were still spots on my hands that hurt but I'm almost back to normal today. So, heed my warning: Follow directions!!!!

Update
Okay, so I never did post regarding that picture of Sam at the beach. We went to Dillon's Beach, in the Bay Area, as a family. This beach has sentimental meaning to us because Travis took me there on one of our first dates. The first time we went it was beautiful. This time, not so much. It was very foggy, a tad cold and too windy. Sammy cried and whined for most of the way there and back. On the way back I finally resorted to distracting him with food. I sat in the back and gave Sam food to keep him quiet, while Travis drove. Wow, I'm not sure if I have just set him up for a life of obesity or what.Next time I will be better prepared.
The day before the beach trip I dragged Travis and Sammy to the California State Fair. It was First Responders Day so Travis got in free and we parked about a half mile outside the park in order to save eight bucks. We walked around and looked at the exhibits mostly. I think it was just nice to do something together as a family (other than watch TV, go to the park, or go out to eat). We actually did end up going to TGI Fridays afterwards.
I start my teacher credentialing program next week. I'm actually kinda excited about it. Though my grades may not reflect it, I really do like school. I enjoy learning, taking on a challenge, setting goals and reaching them. I must admit, I am sick of cooking and cleaning. I'm not going to stop these tasks just because I am in school but it will be nice to feel like I have a purpose. I know, I know, I have a great purpose and it's takng care of Sammy and Travis. I love that I get to be a wife and mom but sometimes the daily tasks of maintaining a household get monotonous.

A Personal Moment
I don't even know how to begin this post. A part of me thinks this is too personal to share on a public blog and another part of me doesn't care. I feel alone in this problem.I feel like there are few who understand. Or, at least, amongst those who I actually know there are few who deal with this issue (that I know of). I talk to God all the time about this issue. I wonder if I am being punished, but then I think that this is faulty thinking. Or, is it? I try to remind myself that God's plan is bigger and better than my own. God's thoughts are not my thoughts and His ways are not my ways. He knows what is best for me and that helps with me patience. I try not to think about it too much because I don't want to be discontent in my daily life. I want to enjoy the blessings I have now and not allow the blessings that I do not have to make me ungrateful or to taint the good things in my life.
You see, since Samuel was born (14 months ago) we have been trying for another child. Children are blessings and I wonder why He has been withholding another blessing from us? To refine us? To make our faith greater? To make us content with what we have? Because He only wants us to have one child? I don't know. We don't have extra money nor great medical insurance to be able to see a fertility doctor. I've had basic medical exams (i.e. blood tests) and everything has come back normal. I know I need to focus on the great blessings I have in my life. And, God has spared me from the agony of miscarriage and/or having a stillborn child. It could be a lot worse, I know. Yet, I struggle.
Even as a little girl I hoped I would have a big family. I use to tell people that I wanted eight children. In fact, sometimes I think I should not be watching "Jon & Kate Plus Eight" because I start to feel discontent about my own life. Logically, I think eight children would be too much for us to handle. I always say "four or five" and Travis says "two or three". So, I think a good compromise would be four (har har har). Nevertheless, I hope for many children (whether that be 3, 4 or 5).The thought of never having another child frightens me.I try not to think about it actually and hope and pray God has more children planned for us.
The irony is that I may get pregnant within the next 6 months and I'll think, "Why was I worried? I just needed to wait on God's timing!I should trust Him more." For years I agonized about when I would get married. When I reached age 25 and was still unmarried,I thought,"Am I ever going to get married?? Why is God withholding this blessing from me? This stinks, I'm going to be single for the rest of my life!!!" And then, a couple months later, I met Travis and we both instantly knew that we were meant to be together. We were married within 6 months. And, of course, now I think,"What was I so worried about?! I should have enjoyed my singless more. I should have traveled more. I should have spent more time being thankful for my singleness than being discontent! I should have taken advantage of that time and not worried about 'this guy' or 'that guy'." I should be using the lesson learned from that and apply it to my current situation, but I still struggle.
I guess I am sharing this on my blog as a way of working through this issue in my life. Also, maybe others will pray for me.
Some days are better than others. Some moments I think, "I should just focus on my family and losing weight. I should focus on being a better wife and mother." Yet, my heart still cries out for another precious baby.:(

Bad Mommy
I hate to admit it, but I feel like a bad mom. This stage Sammy is in frustrates me. He does not know how to talk yet and so he uses whining, crying, and other annoying noises (i.e."Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh") to get his point across.I feel like I can't go anywhere (i.e. grocery shopping, restaurants, etc.) because he will constantly make loud noises which I'm sure is very annoying to other customers. I don't want to be "THAT" parent with "THAT" child. I don't know how much he understands at just 14 months of age and I don't know how to discipline him accordingly. I tell him to "be quiet" but that doesn't usually work. When we are in the car he fusses, whines, cries and makes a loud "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" sound. Well, he does that sound everywhere. This afternoon, I finally just burst into tears (okay, it was one of many times) because I don't know how to get him to stop and that loud "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" sound - it just grates on me. I just feel like I should have more patience with him. I feel like a bad mom. My friend suggested teaching him sign language and I think I will try that.Is this normal one-year-old behavior? Most of the children I have worked with in my life have been over the age of two and discipling a child who can talk is a lot different than training a child who can only babble.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about?? Help me!!

I'm Back!
Well, I finally figured out the problem (which I still really don't understand). So, now I can post pictures to blogger (more motivation now to actually post). The picture I just posted is one I took this week of Sammy at Dillon's Beach. I call this shot "Destiny". Doesn't he look focused and determined?
I'll post more tomorrow (or the day after that...or the day after that...). *Yawn* I'm tired and need to peel myself away from the computer.

New Path
It has been my hope that I would always be able to stay at home with our child(ren).I wish that could be possible but life circumstances do not always work out the way we want them too. I have been lookng for nanny jobs and have been unsuccessful at even finding a nibble. Our direction has changed dramatically within a week's time.
Earlier this week I was researching nanny jobs online. Somehow I came across a California Teacher Credentialing Program that is flexible. It is a 16 month program and I will start out in the classroom as a student teacher almost immediately and would only be in the classroom in the morning. The rest of the coursework I would be able to do from home. Most programs require a fulltime commitment (which would not work for us). The more I looked into it, the more I was convinced that it could actually work for us. And, by the time I earn my credential it will be just before Travis begins his PA program (a 2 year commitmenr; he will not be able to work). We wondered how on earth we were going to survive financially during those two years. When I told Travis about the program he was all for it. It scared me because I was just throwing the idea out there. I wasn't serious! I had not really thought the logistics of it through and now he wanted me to do it!! I wanted to fight the idea but my logical side knew it was a wise course to take. Plus, I'm trying to follow my husband's lead even when I don't necessarily want to do what he is asking of me (I don't want to be away from my son!!). I just need to learn how to have a joyful spirit when I am submitting to his leadership. Anyways, so I have been working through the application process this week and praying for a joyful spirit. Whereever this ends up is where God wants me. For now, I'm applying and seeing how God answers.Oh, and in case you were wondering, while I'm going through the program Travis is going to adjust his school and work schedule as much as possible so that he will be with Sam. Once I am teaching, Sam will be ready for preschool and will be in his own classroom. I have often desired to homeschool our child(ren)but at this time, it's just not possible.
So, that's what I have been up to. Blogspot still posts a weird code whenever I try to post pictures (which is why I haven't posted any pictures lately). Frustrating!

I did it, you should too!
It's late...I don't want to do dishes...seemed kinda fun...
20 years ago I . . .
1. was blissfully happy, living with my siblings & married parents, unaware of true "trials"
2. Obsessed with New Kids on the Block (Truly, I was going to marry Joey Mcintyre)
3. taught myself how to make mac & cheese
10 years ago I . . .
1. had my first official job at Round Table Pizza
2. Was obsessed with dieting
3. Cared way too much about what people thought of me
5 years ago I . . .
1. Started my first year at The Master's College (feels like just yesterday and yet 22 seems so far away)
2. went from having complete freedom and no restrictions to suddenly having restrictions and less freedom (see above)
3. Had hard times (and great times too) & left that school year wondering if I would go back (I did, and I'm glad)
3 years ago I . . .
1. Lived in complete chaos and fun with 6 other girls in a small condo.
2. Made some of the greatest friends who I know I will always have in my life (Sara Mallon!Sarah Rajkowski! Amber Frendt! Shout Out!)
3. Was a nanny for a big family and was contemplating moving back to Sacramento, a lot.
1 year ago I . . .
1. was absolutely exhausted with a brand new baby
2. was so blessed and totally in love with my little guy (still am -- forever & always)
3. Wondering when I would get to have another little blessing :(
So far this year I . . .
1. Have loved watching every milestone Sammy has reached
2. Have realized that the weight gained during pregnancy isn't magic fat that will just slide off instantly after the baby is born.
3. Have realized that pregnancy does not equal eating enough for two adults! It does not mean working your way through gallons of ice cream nor feeling the right to get a doughnut every grocery trip!! ;)
Yesterday I . . .
1. went to the park with Sammy and Travis
2. Opened my big mouth about a teacher credentialing program to my husband and now I am applying!!
3. Made pizza from scratch
Today I . . .
1. prayed for God to give me a joyful spirit about the credentialing program.
2. Continued the application process
3. (we) had dinner with my dad
Tomorrow I. . .
1. will continue the application process
2. will go to Bible Study
3. Will meet up with my husband's wife's cousin, Chrissy & her daughter, Autumn
In the next year I will . . .
1. Continue to pray for God to bless us with another child
2. Continue to try and lose the weight from my last pregnancy (I suck at dieting)
3. Continue to Study Proverbs 31 & the life of Sarah (Abraham's wife) in hopes that I will become a better wife and mom.
Alright, I did it! You should too!
I'm calling out all my friends to post this & answer these questions on their blogs!

Mark Francis Swearinger
I am now officially a bonifide, card carrying Auntie! My little nephew was born July 26, 2008 and weighs in at 7 lbs. 8 ounces. He's had some lung problems but he's making a smooth recovery and other than that he's perfectly healthy. I'm hoping we will get to visit him and his mommy today while they are still in the hospital (My brother won't be there unfortunitely because he had to go back to work yesterday).
I tried to post a picture of him but a weird code posted instead of the picture!!! Argh!!! So annoying!! Does anyone know why it's doing this??

Update
It has been a long time since I have posted anything.Due to blogger not allowing me to post any pictures (for whatever reason)I haven't been as excited to post, but I will give a quick update...
Sammy is mostly walking now. I would say he walks about 90% of the time now. It's cute to watch him walk around the house carrying a throw pillow that's almost as big as he is or daddy's football (makes daddy very happy).
We had his year check up earlier this week & I was surprised to find out that he's only almost 27 lbs., because he feels way heavier! The doctor says he's looking great!
My brother & sister-in-law should be delivering my nephew anytime today or tomorrow! She had regular contractions all day yesterday and they went to the hospital in the afternoon. Even though her contractions were fairly regular and close together the doctor told her to go home because she was only 1-2cm dialated. Mersina, my sister-in-law, has been very calm about it all, which is very impressive. So, I'm just waiting for a phone call from my brother letting me know that my little nephew has been born and is healthy.
On a very different note, I decided to purchase the Jillian Michael's Biggest Winner DVD workout set & I've been rotating the videos. Each video is 30 minutes long and these workouts kick my butt into shape! I definitely feel myself changing & getting stronger. I usually workout to a video while Sammy is napping. I feel so much more accomplished when I actually do the video & my attitude for the rest of the day is a lot more positive. I have opted to not check the scale since I have started because sometimes that can be discouraging. Right now I am trying to make working out and following Weight Watchers more of a lifestyle.Sometimes it can actually be discouraging for me to see that I am losing pounds because then I feel like I can slack off a little bit. Maybe that's kind of a weird reaction but monitoring the scale doesn't always work for me. Right now I just want to feel better in my clothes, look leaner, and feel stronger.

A Week of Hard Partying
Sammy had a busy birthday week! On the day of his real birthday, Wednesday, I took him in the morning to get his 1 year photos taken at the JCPenney Portrait Studio. For his first year of life I have tried to take him every month (missed a few months though due to illness or vacation). This time, I stopped beforehand at Cupcake Craving and purchased a banana cupcake for him to take a picture with. I thought it would make for some cute pictures and boy did it ever. He had that cupcake latched to his mouth like it was permenantly stuck there. In the end, the pose I chose was of him with the cupcake in his hand, a big 'ol frosting mustache and goatee and an expression on his face which apeared to say, "This is delicious!! Whoa! And I think I'm on sugar overload right now!!" It was adorable. Correction: he is adorable. We actually did a lot of different poses before the cupcake one but he just wouldn't stay still and always was making a beeline for different balls in the room.
That night, Travis and I decided we would just go out to dinner with our parents and Sammy since he was going to have a big birthday bash on Saturday. We went to Texas Roadhouse and while the server was giving us our drinks she acidentally spilled one and it broke right by Sammy and I. Glass went flying, Sammy and I were covered in Sweet Tea and Sammy burst into tears. Luckily, the glass didn't get us but we had to thoroughly clean off the diaper bag for sure. Later, the manager came over and said that the dinner was on them and then at the end of the dinner they gave us three free dinner for twos. The grandparents were very nice and told us to keep it, so now Travis and I have a few more date nights ahead of us. : ) Grammy Bev brought Sammy a cupcake and he wasn't so bold with this cupcake. He wasn't sure what to do with it at first and he started taking little nibbles like a puppy would (no hands). It was so funny! Eventually he picked it up and ate it like a champ.
On Saturday, we had a birthday party for him and our immediate family and close friends at Steve's Pizza. They have a nice, big room in the back and the location was great too. I may have overdone his first birthday, but hey, it's his first birthday & he's my sweet little guy! I think everyone enjoyed themselves so I'm glad for that. I, on the other hand, was way too stressed to sit down & relax. You would think that since I didn't prepare the food that I would be able to relax and enjoy myself but that's not quite my nature when I am the hostess. My dad was nice enough to pay for the pizzas & most of the time I spent eyeballing the pizzas trying to figure out if I should order more and if people were truly getting enough to eat. We also could only use the room for two hours & we were trying to rush through all the cake eating & present unwrapping. When Travis picked up the Sesame Street cake he also grabbed a slab of chocolate fudge cake. Omigoodness, I so did not want chocolate for Sammy's cake because I figured chocolate would be way too much sugar & caffeine for him...not to mention the huge mess it would make. But, Travis got his way & Sammy indulged in his cake. What a mess! Luckily we put a tarp down under him so as to not make a mess at the restaurant. When I look at the pictures I just crack up because he looks like a greedy king. All in all, the party was a success but I think I'm going to do these events more low key in the future.
I keep trying to upload pictures but blogger won't let me!! All it keeps posting is the picture code!!! Argh!!!

Happy 1st Birthday to My Beautiful Boy!
The picture in the middle is of his first car ride home! We were expecting a bigger baby (Trav was 10 lbs. and I was 8 lbs. -- and we were both early!!) so that is why his outfit is so gynormous on him! ; )
Happy Birthday My Little Boo Boo Bear!

If A Child is being unusually quiet...
then they are probably getting into something!
I went to go do something in the other room for a sec and I thought, "hmmm...boy he's being quiet. I hope he's okay." I went back into the room to find that he had swiped a bowl of food (I had just finished giving him lunch, cleaned him up but had left a bowl of his uneaten food on the table) and proceeded to play with it. Of course I grabbed the camera! :) Now that he can stand for longer & walk a few steps his area to explore has increased in size. Time for me to go toddler proof the house!

Almost Running
Sam can now take 3 steps. I keep hearing that I shouldn't encourage him to walk because then he will be climbing all over everything, getting into stuff he shouldn't be and generally keeping mommy very busy. Well, I'm naive...I want him to walk!
This morning Sammy & I went to Old Navy for their big $1 flip flops sale. I had a gift card from my birthday and decided this was the perfect time to spend it. It was crazy in there! Reminded me of the craziness of trying to shop on the day after Thanksgiving or before Christmas. I had Sammy in his little stroller & was quickly grabbing items to try on. He was fine until it was time to get in line. The line was wrapped around the store like a snake & I must have waited for 45 minutes to an hour. And of course Sammy was fussy. He wanted out of his stroller and so I used his stroller to hold the clothes while I held him. Then, he started fussing because he wanted down. I really didn't want to put him on the ground because I am sure it is swarming with all kinds of lovely germs & bacteria. Finally, I was just like "Whatever! It's good for his immune system." I seriously got such a great workout trying to keep him near me plus picking him up and putting him back down. My arms must be pure muscle by now. Oh, and he was making some nice smells in his diaper which I'm sure everyone appreciated. There were so many moments I just wanted to give up and leave but I was determined. On a side note, it really frustrates me when people purposefully cut in line and when they are confronted about it they act like the other person is the jerk. A young couple cut in front me & the lady in front of them was telling them off. I don't like conflict so I didn't say anything and I actually didn't even notice until the lady said something because I was so focused on trying to entertain Sam. But, I must say, in the words of Stephanie Tanner, "HOW RUDE!"

Anniversary
Travis & I are going to San Francisco for our anniversary in September! Does anyone know of any great restaurants? I'm thinking...romantic, affordable, not primarily a seafood place and maybe even with a great view?
Also, any other ideas anyone may have for fun, cool stuff to do there? We're going to the 49ers game earlier in the day (I know, soooooooo romantic) so we don't have a ton of time to sight see but I just thought I would gather some ideas!

Bad Parenting 101
Okay, so last night Sammy started standing for longer than usual and would even take a step forward. PROGRESS! He did it twice, but when I grabbed the camera and tried over-and-over again to get him to just take one step forward he wouldn't do it. On top of that my camera only takes 30 second video clips at a time. By the end of it I was sweating, Sammy was fussy and ready for bed, and I was feeling silly for pushing him so hard to walk. He's probably going to finally walk when I am not around.Ugh! Anyways, so I was re-watching some of the videos and laughing at all my attempts and all the silly little things Sammy does. We don't let him play with the remote control or our cell phones (he usually drops them & then they break) so in my attempt to get him to walk I would use the old dangling carrot trick - in this case the remote control or cell phone (I know, totally Bad Parenting 101).
Almost
Sammy is getting closer & closer to walking. He can stand on his own for a lot longer and took his first step yesterday. Won't be long now before he's walking, running, climbing and causing all kinds of chaos!

My Little French Fry Gobbler

My family took me out for a birthday dinner last Saturday and I picked the Elephant Bar. I haven't eaten at that place in the longest time and it was great! Sam enjoyed some french fries (see above).
Normally, I try to feed Sam only nutritious food. I'm losing that battle. I was fighting it for the longest time but now I have resolved to relax on the issue a bit and not stress as much about it. I will continue to prepare him healthy food at home, however out in the world (filled with grandmas, restaurants with junk food choices for kids, etc.) I will let it go. The reality is that if I make "junky processed food" off limits then I am also developing within him (possibly) an idol of the heart for all the things"mommy doesn't let him have." I should take my own parenting advice and eat only good, nutritious food as well. I know it is just a matter of time before Sammy will be saying, "But mommy, you aren't eating it, why should I?" Hmmm...there's a convo I don't want to have. I'm in the process of preparing healthy food for the family but it's difficult because everything easy to make is processed! And I love watching Paula Deen on Food Network but everything worth making is swimming in butter! Gotta love that Paula Deen! Hopefully between now and before he can put together a full sentence (like a weeks time ; ) ) I will have mastered a handful of tasty and healthy recipes the whole family will love. I feel very blessed however that he is a good eater and will eat just about anything I give him.
If you have any healthy, tasty recipes (and like to share) please let me know!

Frankness & Vulnerability & 27 Candles
Well, tomorrow is the big day. I can't believe 30 is just around the corner. Oh my, 27. I think turning 25 was the most difficult for me because I was still single & didn't feel like I had accomplished much in my life. I always wanted to get married right after high school & have lots of babies. I think if God had told me that I wouldn't meet my husband until I was 25...well, I wouldn't have been happy. I would have begged. I would have pleaded! "Please Lord, can't you just give me what I want??!" But it did make the beginning of my twenties very entertaining.
"Is this THE ONE?"
"This guy?"
"That guy?"
Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't want to give you the impression that I dated a lot. I just have an overactive imagination. : )
While I was in the trenches of singledom it was agonizing. Okay, maybe not always agonizing. Weddings were difficult. Friday nights were difficult. Baby showers were difficult. Weddings are especially daunting when it's reception time. When my friend's Nick & Lindsey got married it was unfortunate that I only knew the wedding party. I didn't have a date either. After the wedding I hung out with the wedding party while they took some pictures & by the time I got to the reception everyone was seated & there did not appear to be an open spot in the room. After I waltzed nervously around the room hoping for an open spot or for someone to extend their hand I heard an ominous voice, "Introducing the bride & groom..." Oh crap, I'm standing in the middle of the room, all eyes are on me & I continue to sweat profusely & have a miniature panic attack inside. I scurried to the back of the room and stood alone feeling oh-so pathetic. The wedding party was announced and finally I heard the most melodic sound of, "You can sit over here, with us." So, you see, when you're single weddings can be painful and not just for the typical "I wish I was the one getting married" reason.
Anyways, I totally deviated from my point. What I wanted to say was that when I look back at my early twenties at that girl who always fretted about being single - about the future - I would have told her, "It's okay, enjoy the moment because life goes by fast & when you look back at this time you are going to remember it with fondness." I remember the good times a lot more than the bad. One of the best years of my life was when I lived in LA with 6 other girls in a small condo. For the most part, we were all good friends & we had so many good times together. I love this time in my life as a wife and mother but I wish I would have smelled the roses during that period instead of constantly worrying about when I was going to get married, why I didn't have a boyfriend, etc. I love motherhood. I love walking into my son's room & as soon as he hears me he pops his head up & smiles that big toothy grin as if to say, "Hi mom! I missed you!" I don't care how tired I am that is like a shot of espresso. But if I could be candid for a moment...I wish I would have known how lonely it can be. But then again, someday I will look back at this time & say, "Wasn't it wonderful? I wish I could have it back again!" I probably won't remember the loneliness. As cheesy as it may sound I think it will be my son's smile that will summarize this time for me. He has the best smile.
So, anyways, I'm not fretting about getting older (although, ask me again when I turn the big 3-0). I have a husband who loves me & a child who has a mischievous sense of humor & a sweet spirit. I may have a few gray hairs & a couple *cough* extra pounds but I'd say that ain't bad.
27, here I come!

It's Not Easy Being A Little Guy!

While Sam was eating his breakfast this morning he fell asleep! Of course, I took a few pictures. : ) I was actually a little excited that he did because it meant I could put him in his crib & actually take a shower without a problem.
Earlier this week he finally tried pasta with tomato sauce & he made a big ol mess (of course). He is so much easier to feed now that he almost eats the same foods we do. I try to feed him healthy foods & it helps me to eat better too.
We also put in his new car seat & thought he would finally stop whining when we're in the car but no such luck. He hates being confined I guess. We sometimes think about taking road rips but it just doesn't seem possible because unless he falls asleep all he does is whine & cry. I've even tried giving him toys & though that may give him a minute of entertainment he soon returns to crying. I tell you what, I cannot wait until he's old enough to reason with.
The other day it was such a hard day with him & I eventually broke down into tears. He's going through this stage of wanting to be with me or Travis (both, preferably) every second or otherwise he cries. He even will throw himself on the ground. I thought tantrums don't start until age 2! So, the other day Travis was at work & Samuel was just fussy all day & wanted to be with me every second & I was trying to get household stuff done. He wouldn't take a nap; he was having a rough day. Usually I have a lot of patience but I was so tired from not getting enough sleep that I finally just broke down & pleaded with him (I felt so silly that I was pleading with a 10 1/2 month old). I'm hoping today will be a better day.

Just Thinking...
Ever had days when you just don't feel real motivated? That's been my last couple days. Not motivated to clean. Not motivated to exercise. And definitely not motivated to eat healthy. I did do stuff but I feel like I have not been very productive. I keep thinking, "tomorrow will be a more productive day!" That's always my mantra it seems ("Tomorrow my diet begins!" "Tomorrow I will get this house clean & organized!" "Tomorrow I will..."). And then I think that if I only could get Sam to sleep every night by 8:30pm & then be in bed by 10pm & then wake up at 5am (so that I can get a lot done before Sam wakes up) then, and only then, will I be able to accomplish everything. What's that saying "The heart is willing but the flesh is weak"? Uhhhhh...I think that is what it is. I wish I had enough self-discipline to get up early & to keep an immaculate home. But then I guess I'm wishing I would be someone else cuz that just ain't me. I don't see the point of making the bed & I was always the "messy" roommate during my college years. Thank the Lord my husband isn't a clean freak or else he'd have a headache all the time. But I make a mean chocolate chip cookie so I guess that makes up for my other weaknesses.
It's funny, back in day, before I was married I use to make pretend schedules of what I would do with every moment of the day once I became a wife & mother. I designated specific cleaning tasks for certain days, made up pretend children (names & ages included) & their pretend activities. I really thought that that is what I would do once I was married with child(ren). So, while my professors would pontificate about "this or that" I would be making schedules for my future "married with children" life. I thought I was the only weirdo who did such things but I am happy to announce that my good friend, and fellow weirdo, Sara Mallon also use to make similar schedules. I'm not completely abnormal --yay!! Anyways, so I came across one such schedule in my laptop.
So, just for the heck of it, here it is:
Imaginary Children:
Christian -- 5
Cameron -- 4
Gracie Jean -- 2
Monday:
5:30am Awake, shower, Bible time
6:00 Prep for breakfast, make lunches, basic cleaning
6:30 Wake husband & kids; Breakfast; clean up
7:00 Get kids dressed & get myself dressed
7:30 Leave to drop Christian off at school
8:30 Home + time with Cameron & Gracie
9:00 Laundry + Prepare grocery list
10:00 Grocery Store
11:00 Home + put groceries away + prep for lunch
11:30 Leave to pick up Christian
12:30 Lunch with kids
1:00 Clean up
1:30 Time with kids
5:00 Prepare dinner
6:00 Dinner
6:30 Clean up
7:00 Family Time
7:30 Baths
8:00 Get ready for bed + stories
8:30 Time with husband
10:30 Sleep
So, I guess that is how I imagined life would be & though I am not in those exact circumstances (i.e. I only have one child who is still an infant & does not go to school) it does seem pretty accurate. Well, except for the whole getting up at 5:30am part. Oh, and for the record, Travis has poo-pooed the names Christian & Cameron so those will probably not be showing up in the future. However, Gracie Jean will hopefully come to fruition but in the form of Emma Jean & then Gracie (still haven't solidified a middle name). This is of course if Travis relents & doesn't have a vasectomy after our first daughter (he's petrified of having a daughter!). I suspect she will have him wrapped around her little finger. Girls aren't so bad!

My Hubby, The Nut!

We have been experiencing an ant problem, lately. I swear our house was built on an ant hill because we can never seem to fully get rid of them & the second a crumb is left out or if it is about to rain, here they come, marching two by two! My husband decided to make a special poisonous formula for them (isn't he sweet to be thinking so altruistically for our precious little friends?) & when I went out to the kitchen this morning I laughed when I saw the message he left for them. Who doesn't love free food?!
Don't turn your back!
Our friend Serene, turns 3!

One of my best friends, Meghan has a daughter, Serene. On Saturday, we went to Serene's 3rd birthday in Napa, CA. We finally had an opportunity to get a picture of us with our children. She also has a newborn son, about 7 weeks old now, Matthias James.
Meghan and I have been best friends since the 3rd grade & it's crazy sometimes to think of us as little girls & now here we are, "adults" with children of our own. And might I add, how much does Sammy look like his daddy! He is the spittin' image.
Friday

On Friday, I went to my neice's (she's actually my second cousin but she's always been my neice at heart) softball game. It was brutally hot! Regardless, I had fun hanging out with my aunt & cousins. Sammy had fun with his cousin Bradley (I guess they'd actually be 3rd cousins??)! It was fun to watch them play together because it was like watching two boys "rough & tumble" together instead of an infant & a kid. My boy is growing up!

Mothers, do you agree?
I feel like my brain, specifically my memory, have all gone to a faraway place since I became a mother. My husband will often tell me something, ask me about it later, and I won't know what he's talking about (this is according to him that he actually told me whatever it was because I truly don't remember it). He thinks it is because I don't listen. Maybe that's the case. Or, maybe all the sleep deprivation a mother deals with negatively affects memory. Or possibly when I delivered Samuel, some of my brain cells were expelled as well.
Or, maybe I I just have selective hearing...

Deep Thoughts
"Some complain that roses have thorns -- others rejoice that thorns have roses!"
I saw this quote recently & it definitely made me stop & think. It's often easier to see the bad things ("thorns") in life, unmet needs or desires, and to forget about the blessings (roses). Sometimes I grumble inside because it is going to be 4 years before Travis is done with school (i.e. 4 years until we have money, 4 years until we can move, 4 years until we can buy the extras in life, etc.). My big issue is that I really want to move out of this house, out of the "ghetto" & to a neighborhood where I feel safer. I forget that most young families don't automatically have money to buy a house in a decent neighborhood. Most new families don't have money to buy the 'extras'. There is usually a period of struggling ("sowing") and in time, hopefully, it will lead to a reaping from all that hard work/struggle. So, it may be difficult right now but there are so many roses amongst the thorns and I need to remind myself of this fact often. Part of the blessing during this time is that we are learning to rejoice in the small things. We are learning to be creative with what we do have. Before I was married I spent money all the time. If I could not afford something I put it on credit card. I did not deny myself anything I wanted, within reason (not like I had deep pockets or anything), because it was just me in charge of my finances. Boy have times changed! I don't do frivolous shopping anymore. My interests have changed as well. Whenever I was bored I would go to Starbucks or go shopping (with friends or alone). Now, I am more into cooking, taking care of my son & husband, and household tasks. Hanging out with friends is a treat and something I don't take for granted. That's another thing because motherhood is wonderful but can be very isolating especially since I don't live within a reasonable distance of any friends. So, there have been a lot of drastic changes in my life over the last couple years -- some wonderful, some difficult -- but that's just a part of life.
I just hope that through these difficult times I can look past the thorns, embrace the roses and be the best mother and wife that I can be.

Feeling Better

Today is the first day of feeling better (for me that is). Sam is still a little sick & Travis, well Travis had a couple days of sickness & was then eating cheese quesadillas the very next day. I don't get it. Since I did not clean for a whole week (I was too busy changing many outfits due to Sam's queasy stomach & leaky diaper -- eww...trying to keep him hydrated...worrying about him...and walking around like a zombie while I threw up here, there, everywhere!) today has been dedicated to cleaning - whoo! The laundry incurred in such a short amount of time amazes me. Sometimes I think, "If there is this much laundry for just 3 of us, how much is there going to be when there is 4,5, and then 6?!" Crazy! Hopefully this week will be a little more low key.

(Bleh)
On Tuesday Samuel had the flu...and of course...we all enjoyed it on Wednesday and Thursday. I haven't been this miserable in a long time. Today I feel a teensy bit better and can actually keep fluids down. My husband and Sam are doing a lot better too. It's so scary having a little guy who is sick!

Five Bad Habits (or should be titled "Five Habits that Annoy my Husband" : ) ):

My Toys Travel With Me!
When Animals Attack!

In case you are curious, my little animal is attacking bananas, avocado, monteray jack cheese and cheerios in these pictures (he's gotta bulk up for football season ; ) ). He loves bananas so much. I'm sure he could eat five of them at once if I let him. I feel like I have a different child now because he was the fussiest eater for so long and now he eats with gusto. I am so amazed by how much food he can eat. He could put a group of competetive eaters to shame! Also, he does this new thing whenever I'm taking pictures of him. I think he's just anticipating the flash because he'll squint his eyes and then I end up with a lot of squinty-eyed pictures. It's great that he can feed himself now, but man, what a mess! One of the great aspects of having a dog is that when Sam is done with a meal I can let Daxter in and he can lick the droppings off of the carpet.
